The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and WWF SA have embarked on an ambitious five-year project to implement and scale circular solutions for problem plastics in South Africa.

The plan is to reduce plastic pollution by developing sustainable systems and packaging for the food and beverage industry that will decrease dependence on single-use plastics in favour of packaging that is designed for recycling.
The circularity of PET, for example, is one of its most valuable features and Petco has worked hard to facilitate its collection and recycling in South Africa.

Building a circular economy for more types of plastic packaging is an effective and exciting approach because it should drastically reduce the leakage of plastic waste into the environment, while also creating more income opportunities across the plastics value chain.
